What is a mortice latch and lock?

Mortice latches are one of the most commonly used types of locks to secure doors in commercial and residential properties. Also called mortice locks, mortice latches are installed into a cavity (or mortice) in the edge of the door, hence the name mortice latches. There are two main parts of a mortice latch: the body which is installed in the door and a box keep installed in the doorjamb.

Types of mortice locks.

There are three main types of mortice locks: mortice latches, mortice sashlocks and mortice deadlocks.

Mortice Latches.

Mortice latches have no locking mechanism and are used to open and close doors using a door handle. The two most common types of mortice latches include tubular mortice latches and standard mortice latches.

Tubular mortice latches.

A mortice tubular latch consists of a narrow “tubular” barrel that has a latch. This latch is operated by turning a door handle or doorknob. Due to their size, tubular mortice latches are easier to fit. These are ideal for internal doors, such as passage doors.

A mortice deadlock is a door lock which is operated by a key. There are various types of deadlocks, including 3 lever deadlocks and 5 lever deadlocks. Three lever locks are ideal for internal doors that require a lock for privacy purposes whilst five-lever locks are better suited for doors that require a good degree of security.
